Gateway Council of Hostelling International Featured Events: The Council has an expanded slate of rides of 2008, including a new Recreational Ride series. For more information about the Council and other events, visit the Council's Web site. Here are the Featured Events for 2008:

Sept. 6, Autumn Apple Pie Tour, Marine, Ill.

Sept 6, D.A.R.E. to Ride to the Lake: The Trenton (Ill.) Police Department is putting on the ride to benefit the department's D.A.R.E. program. Day of ride registration begins at 7 a.m. Routes of 11, 25, 50 and 62 miles are available. If you register before Aug. 20, the cost of the ride is $15 and includes a T-shirt and other goodies. Day of ride registration is $20. for more information, visit the ride's Web site.

Sept. 6-7, MS 150: The National Multiple Sclerosis Society puts on its annual two-day fundraising ride in Columbia, Mo. Participants are encouraged to collect donations. For more information, visit the event's Web site.

Sept. 20, Team Hope Ride for a Cure: Troy Relay for Life and the Troy Lions Club are putting on this fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Routes of 13, 26 and 62 miles are available. Registration takes place from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at the MCT parking lot at the intersection of Illinois Route 162 and Old Troy Road. Sept. 27, Tour de Coal: The Coal Country Chamber of Commerce will put on the third annual Tour de Coal in Benld, Ill. Routes of 15, 30 and 63 miles are available. For more information, visit the ride's Web site.

Oct. 17-19, Hilly Hundred: This two-day tour of the scenic -- and hilly -- countryside near Bloomington, Ind., has long been a favorite ride for many of our members. For more information, visit the ride's Web site.

Wednesday, Sept. 3, BABES Wednesday Evening Ride: The Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society - Mississippi River Valley Scenic View Ride. Meet at Columbia Turner Hall, 211 East Cherry St. (at bottom of Cherry Hill), Columbia, IL. Please park on the outside edges of the Turner Hall parking lot. Meet at 5:45 p.m., go at 6 p.m. Two or three routes (with hills) of 12-20 miles. Flat options also available. Free for HI-USA members, $3.00 for non-members. Eat at Thai House, 109 S. Sunday, Sept. 7, BABES Ravissant Winery Ride: Join the Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society on our popular Ravissant Winery Ride. Three or four routes 15-35+ miles. 11 a.m. departure for longer route, noon departure for the shorter routes. After the ride, enjoy wine and entertainment at the winery. You may bring food to the winery, but you cannot bring in beverages not purchased from the winery. From Missouri, take 40/I-64 East, to I-64 East (exit 2), to I-255 South (exit 7), to IL Route 15 East (exit 17A), to Frank Scott Parkway West, turn left on Frank Scott, then turn right onto Town Hall Road. Sunday, Sept. 28, BABES Hidden Lake Winery Ride: The Belleville Area Bicycling and Eating Society will explore the roads of Clinton, St. Clair and Madison counties on this rural ride based at the Hidden Lake Winery near Aviston, Ill. We will have three routes ranging from 18 to about 40 miles on flat to mildly rolling roads. We'll meet at 10 a.m. and take off at 10:15. To get to Hidden Lake from downtown St. Louis, take U.S. 40/I-64 East, to I-64 East (exit 2), to Albers Road (exit 34), turn left on Aviston/Albers Road, go through the town of Albers, turn left on Highline Road, then turn left on Wellen Road.
